Terasem is a conjunction of the Latin words Terra (Earth) and Semen (Seed).
Together they mean Earthseed, a belief in the panspermic potential for life, consciousness, or technology to grow and flourish from and beyond Earth.
Popularized by Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, where a fictitious religion seeks to inspire hope in the future through a belief in our cosmic destiny.
Terasem is both: A seed of Earth – Something born from the planet that carries the potential to grow elsewhere (e.g., colonization of space, seeding new worlds).
A philosophy of planetary stewardship – The idea that humans are seeds of Earth, responsible for nurturing and spreading Earth’s values, ecology, or consciousness.
In 2004, Bina and Martine Rothblatt founded a series of charitable organizations to pursue their inspiration for Terasem. Their son, Gabriel (Swami G), continues to share the message of their divine inspiration through the Terasem Movement Transreligion, Inc. a religious organization with it’s own version of the “Book of the Living” an evolving document known as The Truths of Terasem.
